Wear Your Dolphins To Work Day

April 11 - Wear Your Dolphins To Work Day

On April 11 1900, the US Navy accepted the design of its first official submarine the USS Holland, named after the engineer and designer John Philip Holland. This is traditionally treated as the birth of submarining.

On this day, every submarine qualified individual should proudly wear their dolphins on their civilian shirt while at work. The goal is to raise awareness on the service you provided.

My Ka-bar Gila Folder

The Ka-bar Gila Folder Knife I ordered came in this morning and to tell the truth, I’m real happy with it!

It’s a little bigger than what I’m used to for a daily carry, but I think I can get comfortable with it.

Coming in at just around 9 inches with the max width of the blade around 1-3/8”
I worked out in the yard today with it and it feels really comfortable in my hand. I whittled a bit on a limb I had cut off and the blade came pretty sharp right out of the box.
One thing I have figured out about researching things on the internet, NEVER put much into what others say about anything you are researching.
On several youtube videos, there was always one person that had gripes about this knife.
  • Cheap China crap
  • poor quality blade metal
  • The thumb opening shreds my finger
  • Feels cheap
  • and a few others that I can tell you right now were full of sh*t..
After only a few minutes of holding this knife, I knew they had either never held it or just typing to see they’re own crap.
  • This knife feels good in my hand, the metal takes an edge without much work and holds it.
  • The thumb hole used for opening the knife doesn’t do anything to my thumb (I’ve only got one other knife that uses blade deployment like this)
  • It has some weight to it but doesn’t feel bulky
What I suspect is;
  • They don’t like things made in China.
  • They think if it’s not expensive, it’s crap.
  • They don’t like Ka-bar (if this is the case, they should be allowed to own a knife)
  • Or, they are just trolling the comment section of the videos
In all, for the $16.30 (they are cheaper in places too), I would say I am extremely happy with it.
Also, it just goes to show that you cannot believe everything you see on the internet (it’s sad that A LOT of people do).

Bye Bye Ferox

So, I stopped by a park today to sit and drink my coffee and chill for a bit.

I put my backpack on the picnic table, took out my pocket camera just to click off a few pictures.

I didn’t venture far from the table with my backpack and just walked around snapping a picture here and there.

I returned to the table, sat down and started checking Google+ and Facebook (mostly Google+). For some reason, I removed my Maxpedition Ferox from the backpack’s molle webbing to do something, which I cannot remember what I was using it for.

I remember folding up and setting it on the table and that’s the last time I remember seeing it.
I was posting back and forth with a friend on G+ and got distracted while packing up the camera and stuff.
I grabbed my coffee and backpack but I don’t remember picking up the knife…

Oh well.. It’s not like it was a high dollar knife, but I really did like it – everything about it. Also, I had just got it the way I like it – smooth opening, the blade lock worked really great. I could open it with one hand (thumb stud) easily.
It just really bums me out knowing I lost it and someone had an early Christmas / birthday.

Anyway, I have a Ka-Bar Gila coming in tomorrow and I’ll see if it can/will take the place of the Ferox. I’m hoping I’ll be happy with the K2 Gila, but I’m not holding my breath on it.
